In today’s world of social media it’s still a great idea to go out and meet people face-to-face. I love meeting new people online and sharing our common experiences within the business of music. There’s never been a greater time than now to mingle with other musicians around the world. But wouldn’t it be better to meet in person while having a beer?

In the article below, Leena Sowambur over at MTT tells us How to Talk To Strangers.

How To Talk To Strangers

BY: LEENA SOWAMBUR

You can't go it alone. You have to network.

Networking online or in person (eventually it is necessary to do in person) involves talking to complete random strangers. People you don’t know, people who might be untrustworthy, people who might have an agenda, people who might take from you, people who might steal from you, people who might harm you. We don’t like talking to strangers. Strangers are bad. Strangers will hurt you. Strangers have negative associations.

Yet we are all strangers to other people.

I’m not a shy person. I’m outgoing, chatty, and extroverted. I still don’t like talking to arbitrary unfamiliar, alien people. Why? I was always told not to talk to strangers as a child. As children our parents drum that rule into us, and it’s a good thing. We need to be aware of danger. However, we also need to be aware that the psychological tools that we needed to keep us safe as kids are not always appropriate in the varying situations we find ourselves in as adults.

I have a 3 year old niece, Laksha, who until recently was “shy”. Earlier this year we went on a huge family Caribbean cruise. My niece and I would take walks around the ship. In this environment, my adult self had no issue with greeting my fellow passengers even though they were all strangers. It was sunny, relaxed, and our spirits were high. I knew Laksha and I were safe on the ship and I was right in my own way. Laksha thought differently. She knew everyone was a stranger and therefore not to be trusted. Laksha was right in her own way. Passengers would frequently attempt to greet my beautiful little niece. Laksha avoided eye contact by hiding in my arms or rubbing her eyes. This was interpreted as shyness. Shyness in young children is a psychological defence mechanism against harm from strangers. The first part of the defense process is to be unapproachable. The next is to run away, scream, and cry for their parents. Following this, it is to defend themselves against other small children. My niece knew that I thought that these “strangers” were ok, but she needed the chance to make her own decisions and practice “sizing people up.” As adults, we make those decisions instantaneously – we’ve had more practice! Of course, following her many social experiences at such a young age, I’m proud to say that Laksha is now better than me at selecting and talking to new people!

Thanks to the folks over at Negativland.com for sharing it with us. They wrote “This oft-referenced article is from the early ’90s, and originally appeared in Maximum Rock ‘n’ Roll magazine. While some of the information and figures listed here are dated, it is still a useful and informative article. And no, we don’t know how to reach Steve Albini.”

The Problem With Music

by Steve Albini

Steve Albini is not happy with record companies.

Whenever I talk to a band who are about to sign with a major label, I always end up thinking of them in a particular context. I imagine a trench, about four feet wide and five feet deep, maybe sixty yards long, filled with runny, decaying shit. I imagine these people, some of them good friends, some of them barely acquaintances, at one end of this trench. I also imagine a faceless industry lackey at the other end holding a fountain pen and a contract waiting to be signed. Nobody can see what’s printed on the contract. It’s too far away, and besides, the shit stench is making everybody’s eyes water. The lackey shouts to everybody that the first one to swim the trench gets to sign the contract. Everybody dives in the trench and they struggle furiously to get to the other end. Two people arrive simultaneously and begin wrestling furiously, clawing each other and dunking each other under the shit. Eventually, one of them capitulates, and there’s only one contestant left. He reaches for the pen, but the Lackey says “Actually, I think you need a little more development. Swim again, please. Backstroke”. And he does of course.

Every major label involved in the hunt for new bands now has on staff a high-profile point man, an “A & R” rep who can present a comfortable face to any prospective band. The initials stand for “Artist and Repertoire.” because historically, the A & R staff would select artists to record music that they had also selected, out of an available pool of each. This is still the case, though not openly. These guys are universally young [about the same age as the bands being wooed], and nowadays they always have some obvious underground rock credibility flag they can wave.

This is a very long and interesting article so I’m going to cut to the chase. A band got a deal and found money being thrown at them and taken from them at an astounding rate with many people taking a cut. In the end, per Albini, “the band members have each earned about 1/3 as much as they would working at a 7-11…”

If you’re wondering how companies like Apple, Amazon, and Google are kicking ass and taking names, even in a “down” economy, here’s the answer…

User experience.

This stuff isn’t just for the supernerds who program iPhone apps and websites; it’s something you can use in your music marketing and it’s a lot more simple than people make it out to be.

For example, take a look at this letter I received in my mailbox yesterday…

This is huge for the LA based group of “five friends who wanted to transcend the disconnected and nonsensical nature of life in the city to create something consequential, the band embarked with hollow-body guitars, well-tuned drums, and a glockenspiel.”

Founder of the band, Brady Erickson, approached us through our mutual friend and, at the time their booking agent, Rebecca Balin when we offered a FREE mastering session for “Friends of Rebecca“. As soon as we heard “Broken Arrow“, the track they needed mastered, we were hooked. Their combination of simplistic yet complicated arrangements were so fresh that we had to master the entire EP. Thankfully the band and the record didn’t yet have a mastering engineer so we got the gig. Lucky us!

Fast forward to today and The Ross Sea Party is currently planning for an upcoming album and seeking funding through a KickStrarter campaign. Since we’re not only business contacts and friends, but also huge fans we, of course, contributed to the project. Both Brady and Rebecca have been two of our top referrers who’ve made commissions from business they’ve sent our way so we thought we would contribute to The Ross Sea Party project to help with what we feel is going to be one of the best new acts of 2012/2013.

Best of luck to The Ross Sea Party from your friends at CrazyEye Music Services!

If you know of a band or act that is seeking professional mixing, mastering or development we offer a 10% commission for paying referrals. Plenty of past clients have taken advantage of this program and have made good money to help support their causes. Whether that’s buying more equipment, helping with show expenses or simply helping with everyday costs. If you’re willing to send us qualified musical artist who are in need of professional production services, we’re willing to share that revenue with you.

A SMS Marketing Campaign seems like a great and simple way to connect with fans. It can be used as a gentle reminder to your fans that you’re thinking of them and maybe even doing something special for them very soon.

It can also see it used for…

Show updates

A coupon for merchandise discounts

Happy birthday notes to fans

Or just to say Hi!

The possibilities are practically endless with the only limit being your own imagination.

Below is an excerpt from a great article by ImagePR founder, Jem Bahaijoub. Jem is an established creative and strategic leader with over a decade of experience in the international music and entertainment industry.

Use what’s at your disposal

According to a recent Pew study, 90% of Americans use their mobile handsets for texting. It therefore makes sense that SMS marketing becomes an integral part of your mobile marketing campaign.

Fantexter.com is a text messaging service launching this month specially enabling musicians to communicate with their fans instantly. Starting at $12.99 a month, it’s an affordable method of mobile communications. Be careful though. There is a fine line between communicating with your fans and harassing them. Here’s a brief video that describes the coming service.

The key to SMS marketing is knowing that less is more

Make each message count, and don’t oversaturate your fans to the brink of spamming. So there you have it. Launching a mobile marketing campaign isn’t as hard as you think. The music industry is thankfully starting to react to the need for easy and affordable mobile marketing solutions for DIY musicians. You just need to do four things – assess your reality, create a strategy, research your tools, and get mobile! Good luck.
